So basically i am writing this while i’m waiting for my new IDE Update to download, this hopefully massive post will be a massive rant about anything, so here it goes.
So Kingdom, this game i first thought of when i was first juggling with the idea of programming as a hobby, it was going to be a linear game which you have to escape your little village and goto some kingdom somewhere, here you find the king who is looking for an heir, so obviously i was wanting the player to be the heir, it didn’t get any father than than. i wrote a Batch script which ran i very basic version of the game, so if you got a single character wrong or a command wrong the entire system would freeze, which was not a very good design. but i did eventually show my IT teacher it an he was impressed with it, i still remember what he told me “Chris, forget todays work, i would like you to work on this.” i could tell he wanted me to do something big, i left the original game for a long time while i studies Java for a few months, i think one of my first games was an original incarnation of Kingdom, but it was the most buggiest and simplest thing i have ver seen. but the thing is, i thought it was amazing, it had a store and a forge where you could sell you wares you built or even buy some. it also had a mining feature where it picked a random number and you struck an ore or just dirt. this feature did make a return in the old version which i did a month ago, this was the starting point, i did several other things in Java which to me were amazing, i built a rock paper scissors game which broke when ever you chose rock and then i built a game which i called ‘TDS’ or ’Tactical Domestic Simulator’. i did steal the title from the early version of the Sims but who knew? it was an alright game, you had mood bard which needed filled up, you could get a job, you could even choose between 3 different houses, it sounds like a good sounding game but there was one problem, it was unplayable. even i saw it was completely broken in every way. i tried adding a saving format which did work but it was… broken, this is what happens when you make a game which is really complex with very little Java skill.
You would have thought i would be programming in JFrames by now, i can do JFrames but i do struggle learning sometimes, i am getting it slowly but it is very hard for me to take something in like this, i remember one time my friend James taught me HTML and CSS in a single day. my head killed the day after and when i say killed, i mean it felt like my head was being hammered. i managed to learn the whole of HTML in a single sitting, that is one task! i built websites for about 2 weeks when i took a break off Kingdom, i got some pretty good looking websites but i realised i couldn’t do this for a living, i mean websites are cool but really… i got bored of HTML after 10 minutes of coding. where as i feel shockingly happy when i code in Java, like when i find a bug, i spend hours fixing it but when it runs well for the first time, it feels amazing! it is these small moments of coding that make it worth while. i love programming, i love the idea of sitting down and coding for an hour and making something which is to me just amazing.
Woow this post is big! dam… the download is only half way, ugh.
So now onto my most loved games, as many of you will know, i love playing games, as i imagine many of you like to play games, i like to play Sandbox games, or Simulation games. i love the idea of having something like the Sims and being able to make myself in it and helping them live out their dreams. i love building the houses for them, i love making them eat constantly without consequence… i want that to happen to me! but the best thing i love about Simulation/Sandbox games is the creativity. i love making things up like small background stories or even worlds which i can mess about in. so you might think i have a mind like a writer, i am a writer, i do write lots of things, i occasionally write stories but they never finish, i love writing about events happening in my world, or even locations in the world. currently i am writing a book, but even though it is a story, most of it is describing the location and culture of the place. and the story is sort of a side part. i think i posted a story about Ôriésmin a few days ago, this is a world i made up, it has Dwarves in it but not how you would expect them. everyone thinks that the Dwarves are natural miners, who delve into mountains looking for gold, in my story these Mining Dwarves are dying out, they have become a rare sight in the world. so all of the normal Dwarves live above ground in towns or villages, some even live in fortresses like Ôriésmin. i have a sort of vague idea of what the book is going to be about, but i am so tempted to scrap the story and just write about the world. i know it sounds odd but i want to write about the world and talk about all of the amazing places and cultures which live in the world, i think people would describe me as a Geographer or Historian, or even a Cartographer. o love drawing Maps but i never seem to get them right, the mountains look odd or it is just my stupid hand writing. so i really am running out of things decent to talk about so i might end it here. if you have read this all the way though then i congratulate you for interest! if not… well what ever.
